Unctad just published its 2010 World Investment Report.
The report reveals estimates for Global Economy with average annual growth of 5.7% to 6.2% between 2010 and 2012 for developing countries. The world GDP should rise by 2.9% this year and 3.3% in 2011; developing countries will reveal a growth lower than 2%.

Interesting is that the report reveals that Brazil takes over the United States in the ranking of preferred countries for investments until 2012; Brazil ends up on the third place with

Also interesting to read is that FDI in 2009 was impacted negatively by the increasing sales of foreign affiliates to domestic companies; Brazilians putting the money where there mouth is.

Last month, the British agency Employment Conditions abroad published the 2010 report of the most expensive cities in the world for expats.
The study found that RIo de janeiro is now the most expensive city on the American continent, yes, more expensive than New York even.  In 2009 Rio ranked on the 132th place, today it is on 28, New York stands on 29.

And also, the study is not comprehensive and targeted to expats.  It includes food, (groceries and eating out), drinks, tobaco, services, clothing, electrical goods and “motoring”.  It does not include accomodation, car purchase or school fees.  This explains why also Brussels went up in the ranking (from 35 to 25).

But the study reflects a reality. The rise for Brazilian commodities and the strong real play an important part in this.  And as Adage reported last month: Brazil’s emerging lower middle class fires up marketers in Brazil

But it does reflect a reality that prices in Rio are outrageously high, and have been for some time (I’ve been writing about this for awhile). Interestingly, though, Rio and New York were right next to each other on the list – Rio as the 28th most expensive city and New York (Manhattan) as the 29th.

Each year Brazil moves up in the ranking, this year in ends on the 12th place, above Belgium which ranks on 16, Germany (33), and France (44).  By end large, rich countries are happier.
Spain falls down to no. 17 of  21 European countries in terms of happiness.

adjective thriving is well chosen:
“Subjects that reportyed high scores were considered “thriving”.  “The percentage of thriving individuals in each country determined our rankings.”

We reported last May on the attempts of Europe to revitalize the talks on a trade zone between Europe and the Mercosur. Not much has happened since, except for the fact that the trade balance of Europe continues to deteriorate.  Last year in April their was just a tiny trade surplus of 0,1 billion in Belgium, this year (despit the Euro which decreased substantially in value and should support exports), the trade deficit amounts 1 billion Euro in April.  That is massive.

Today some news on the attempt of the trade talks between Europe and Mercosur appeared again.  Yet, agriculture remains a problem.  Read: Europe wants to export, but prevent Brazilian imports coming in.  That bird won’t fly.  A lot of news on these trade talks in Europe, but not a word in the Brazilian press; Europe is far  less a priority for Brazil than Mercosur is for Europe,  what counts for Brazil is China and emerging markets like (South) Africa, that’s where the growth is.
