David Rubenstein, co-founder of Carlyle Group (CYL.UL), plans to announce seen two or three deals in Brazil. The deals would run “in the hundred million-dollar area”.
“We also recognize that Brazil is the fifth most populous country in the world and its GDP will probably be the fifth-largest in the world in the next decade, so we need to be here,” he added.
Brazil’s property market is set to become one of the hottest markets in 2010. The country is one of the world’s fastest growing economies, its foreign direct investment has increased and Brazil will host the 2014 soccer Worldcup and the 2016 Olympic Games, which will bring a boost in infrastructure.
Brazil property specialist, Colordarcy, has see Brazilian property enquiries raise by 60% since the Olympic announcement. The company has responded by launching a consultancy service to help clients to source the best real estate deals in Rio de Janeiro. Loxley McKenzie, CEO of Colordarcy predicts an annual increase of 20% pzer annum until the Olympics of 2016.
Mortgages will soon be available to international buyers and this will create a further boost to Brazil’s property market.
The US real estate Tycoon Sam Zell focused a great deal of his 2008 and 2009 on Brazil after his disastrous buyout of Tribune Co; amongst other Zell bought a 19% stake in the Brazilian Gafisa SA.
Indeed, the mortgage to GDP ration in Brazil stands at 3% today (zee below graph to compare with other countries).. Zell thinks this needs to be in double digits, adding that this could happen within 3 to 5 years. In Mexico that figure now stans around 12%; Zell thinks within 3 years the Brazilian mortgage/GDP ratio will grow to the same level as Mexico.
Supermarket sales in Brazil went up 7,3% compared to the year before. The sales rise resulted largely from the further inclusion of social classed D and E. This social progress of this enormous slice of the population underlines the growth potential ahead.
Unemployment dropped in October to an all-time low of 7,5%, while average income rose 3,2% year-on-year to R$ 1.350 (770 USD)
Also important: the consumer price index is running at a 12 month rate of 4,27% as of October, comfortably beow the government’s official goal of 4,5%. With inflation under control, the central bank keeps its Selic base interest rate at 8,75%, the lowest rate ever.

The news agency AFP reported last week that Rio made huge advances since IOC member Carloz Nuzman made a “passionate and effective” presentation to the European Olympic Committee in Istanbul last November. Aided to a large part by Brazilian president Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva, they have built on that steadily and, reports AFP, with apparently a vibrant economy and the funds in place they are ready to meet all the requirements of the IOC.
The real decission will be in the hands of the Belgian IOC president Jacques Rogge. Rogge leaves office in 2013 and he really wants to leave a legacy. The man succeeded with Beijing hosting a succesful games despite universal scepticism. What better legacy could Rogge leave than seeing South America win the right to host the Games for the first time.

Of course the privacy debate also lightened up in Brazil, but Carlos Ximenes of Google Brasil guarantees that the same software will be used as in France, where number plates of cars will be barred. On top of that the Brazilian system will allow users to immediately delete a screen-raster when privacy issues exist.
Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte (the home of Google Brazil) and Rio de Janeiro are the first cities to be covered. Truly hope Florianopolis will also be added to the list.
